What is the Florida Statewide Assessment?

What Does the Florida FSA Test Measure?

FSA ELA Assessments or LAFS
What was previously known as the Reading and Writing NGSSS in 2014 has turned into the Florida Standards or the LAFS (Language Arts Florida Standards).

- Text format and purpose – Students are required to support their written arguments with logic and analysis. - Range of writing – Students are required to write for a variety of audiences, tasks, and objectives with both short and long time frames. With planning and using editing strategies, their writing should be adaptable and suitable for thought, research, or writing revision.
Research for building and presenting knowledge – Students need to research both broad and concrete themes and subjects to build and present their knowledge. During their research, they need to evaluate the accuracy of the material and the reliability of each source.
To help students with their assignments, the ELA Writing test will provide students with a planning sheet where they can organize their time, thoughts, arguments, or take notes about what they need to write.
ELA Reading Assessment
For the FSA ELA Reading Test, there are four standards. Each grade has different requirements, also known as “Item Specifications.” All ELA grade examinations use the same standards. However, the level of difficulty rises with each grade. In total, students should expect 55 up to 66 items on the Reading Assessment.
These are the standards for the ELA Reading Assessment:
- Reading range and text complexity – Students must be able to read and understand both straightforward and intricate literary and informational materials.
- Craft and structure – Students need to analyze how word choices might affect the tone or meaning of a sentence or paragraph. They also need to evaluate the organization of the text’s sentences, paragraphs, and passages, as well as the text’s use of style.
- Key concepts and details – Students must determine whether the text’s meaning or main idea is stated openly or must be derived logically. To back up their claims, students must provide evidence taken straight from the text. Students must recognize and summarize the work’s main themes, ideas, and facts, as well as examine the logic that underlies how events, concepts, and characters develop in the narrative.

FSA Math Assessments or MAFS
Same as with the LAFS, in 2014, the NGSSS for Mathematics was re-aligned and replaced with the Mathematics Florida Standards or MAFS.

What is a Passing Score on the FSA in Florida?
The FSA assessments have five accomplishment levels.
