What is a CJBAT test?

The CJBAT (Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test) is a written exam for entry-level police officers to work in law enforcement agencies in Florida. In 2019 The FDLE stated that the CJBAT test will be the only entry-level test used.

The official CJBAT exam is published by the company IOS. Once you have decided that you are ready to take the exam, you will need to register and schedule your test online with the Pearson VUE website. After you have written the CJBAT exam, you will receive your results via them as well.

Where can I take the CJBAT?

The CJBAT is only administered in the State of Florida. Applicants, training schools, and criminal justice agencies may access examination pass/fail results on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement website.

All payments, registration, and scheduling for the CJBAT exams are done through the Pearson Vue website.

Is the CJBAT difficult?

CJBAT tests are one of the more difficult exams for law enforcement in the U.S because they cover both cognitive topics and behavioral questions that you might not have had to answer before.

What must I expect on the CJBAT exam?

The Criminal Justice Basic Abilities test can either be written with pencil on paper, or done on the computer-based version. Both versions have the same number of questions, requirements, and test duration.

What is the test format?

There are 97 multiple-choice questions that you need to answer and complete in one and a half hours.

Format of the test

The CJBAT is divided into three sections:

  • Section I: Behavioral attributes
  • Section II: Memorization
  • Section III: Written comprehension, written expression, deductive reasoning, and inductive reasoning

Section I

In this section, you will be tested to determine whether you have the necessary job-related behavioral attributes to make you a successful correctional or law enforcement officer. There are 47 questions in this section and it should take you 20 minutes to complete.

Section II

In this section, you are tested on your ability to memorize. Here you will be presented with images that you will be questioned on to assess what you remember from them. There are 10 images that you have one and a half minutes to study and then answer the questions for each.

Section III

In this section, you are tested on your cognitive abilities. You have one hour to answer 40 questions. These test your written comprehension, written expression, deductive and inductive reasoning.

It is important to note that at least 30 of the 50 questions must have answers in Sections II and III for candidates to pass.

How long is the CJBAT score valid?

Your CJBAT score is valid for four years.

Preparing for the CJBAT exam

What you need to bring:

You will need two forms of identification that show your name, signature, and photo. These could be either your current passport, driver’s license, state/province ID, national or military ID.

You do not need:

Try not to bring any personal items with you such as a handbag, backpack, or anything used to carry your belongings. If you do, these will be placed on the floor, at your feet, beneath the area you will write and you will not be allowed to have access to these during your test.

The following items are not permitted:

  • Calculators
  • Spelling aids
  • Photographic devices
  • Electronic devices
  • Beepers, mobile phones, and other communication devices
