Why are in-trays so influential?
The in-tray exercise is an interview favourite for many employers as it demonstrates how a candidate would process a workload if they got the job. It’s a ‘hands-on’ job simulation that’s very useful for the employer as candidates’ prioritisation skills and thought processes are clearly revealed.
Because the in-tray exercise is such a rigorous & ‘real-world’ practical test, it frequently exposes candidates who’ve performed well elsewhere in their interview or assessment event. That’s why employers like it. (And why interviewees don’t!)
As with so many elements of career success, practice makes perfect.
